6GK1160-4AA01 Siemens CP1604 - Product Discontinuation Announced for 1 October 2027

Siemens has announced the product phase-out of the Siemens CP1604, effective from 1 October 2025. The Siemens communications processor will remain available for the time being. The next key deadline is 1 October 2027.

Which Siemens assembly is affected?

The product announcement concerns the Siemens CP1604 mit der Bestellnummer 6GK1160-4AA01. Siemens classifies the assembly as a communications processor for PC/104-plus systems. The Siemens CP1604 connects PC-based control and automation solutions to PROFINET IO. The assembly features an integrated 4-port real-time switch and the ERTEC-400-ASIC. Siemens describes the CP1604 as a PC/104-plus card for PROFINET IO applications.

Siemens assigned the PM400 milestone to the SIemens CP1604 on 1 October 2025, marking the start of the “Product phase-out announcement” stage. The Siemens product announcement, entry ID 109998928 is dated 28 August 2026. Siemens has scheduled product discontinuation under PM410 for 1 October 2027.

Product status legend:

  • PM300: Siemens continues to supply the assembly as part of its regular product range.
  • PM400: Siemens announces the product phase-out. New units remain available to order for the time being.
  • PM410: Siemens discontinues the assembly, marking the start of the spare parts phase.
  • PM490: Siemens ends manufacturer spare parts supply.
  • PM500: Siemens brings the product life cycle to a complete end.

What does PM400 mean for maintenance and procurement teams?

PM400 significantly changes the spare parts strategy for the Siemens CP1604. Siemens no longer actively markets the CP1604. However, according to the announcement, new units remain available to order. This transitional phase provides time for planning, budgeting and technical assessment. Maintenance and procurement teams should review their existing stock. In addition, every critical PC-based PROFINET application should be documented.

The Siemens CP1604 product phase-out, which began on 1 October 2025, does not mean an immediate end to supply. Siemens has classified the CP1604 under milestone PM400 since that date, marking the beginning of a strategically important phase-out period. Maintenance, engineering and procurement teams now have time to prepare. This time should be used for spare parts planning, risk assessment and evaluating potential migration options.

The greatest risk arises with the planned product discontinuation on 1 October 2027. From this date, the Siemens CP1604 will reach milestone PM410. Siemens will then supply the CP1604 only as a spare part, subject to availability. New units will no longer be available through regular supply channels. Measures should therefore be taken to safeguard critical industrial systems before this date.

Siemens does not specify a compatible successor product for the Siemens CP1604. As a possible alternative, Siemens suggests the Siemens PN driver 6ES7195-3AA00-0YA1. This solution can be used in conjunction with a standard networl card. However, its suitability depends on the specific application. Technical testing, the software environment and the system architecture will determine whether this is feasible.

EICHLER supports business with repairs, testing and the supply of spare parts. This reduces reliance on the new parts market. Faulty Siemens CP1604 assemblies can be analysed and repaired. In addition, EICHLER can assist with the stocking of functionally tested spare parts. This provides greater planning certainty for procurement and maintenance departments. EICHLER offers repairs, sales, on-site service and Life Cycle Management for industrial electronics.

1 October 2027 marks the planned discontinuation of the Siemens CP1604. The obsolescence phase will begin on this date. From then on, Siemens will no longer supply the Siemens CP1604 as a new part. This particularly affects systems with long operating lifespans. Many companies plan decommissioning over several years. Unplanned breakdowns result in high costs.

Maintaining an adequate stock in good time protects critical production areas. At the same time, a repair strategy avoids costly complete overhauls. This reduces the pressure to invest and extends the service life of existing systems.

What advantages does EICHLER offer when it comes to discontinued technology?

EICHLER extends the life cylce of end-of-life automation technology. This is particularly relevant to the situation with the Siemens CP1604. Repairs at component level safeguard existing hardware. Function-tested spare parts bridge supply gaps. Technical consultancy provides support with asset surveys and risk classification.

For maintenance engineers, system availability is the top priority. For procurement staff, the focus is on finding the most cost-effective solution. EICHLER combines both objectives. Repairs and stocking spare parts often cost less than retrofit projects. At the same time, the existing system structure remains stable.

What exactly should happen now?

Operators should identify all locations where the Siemens CP1604 6GK1160-4AA01 is in use. This hould be followed by an assessment of the criticality of the systems. Critical Siemens CP1604 assemblies should be given priority. Spare parts should be planned for before 1 October 2027. Repairability and stockholding strategy should be assessed at an early stage.

The discontinuation of the Siemens CP1604, effective from 1 October 2025, does not constitute an immediate halt to supplies. However, the announcement sets a clear deadline. On 1 October 2027, procurement will move into the spare parts phase. EICHLER helps to make this phase more predictable. This ensures that systems remain operational for longer and that budgets are easier to manage.
