Siemens announces product phase-out for SINAMICS G180 effective October 1, 2024.

On October 1, 2024, the SINAMICS G180 from Siemens reached milestone P.M400.

This marks the beginning of the product phase-out and initiates important changes that technicians and purchasers need to consider.

How does the product status of SINAMICS G180 affect operations?

The SINAMICS G180, particularly the air-cooled compact devices and cabinet systems, will reach milestone P.M400 as of October 1, 2024. This means that Siemens will end active marketing of the product, although new orders can still be placed until September 30, 2026. During this phase, the products remain available as new parts; however, Siemens will no longer manufacture new units after that date.

This milestone is crucial for long-term operations in existing systems. Once the discontinuation milestone (P.M410) is reached on October 1, 2026, only spare parts and service support will be available. Technicians and maintenance personnel will need to pay particular attention to spare part availability in order to ensure continued system reliability.

What happens after milestone P.M410?

After October 1, 2026, the SINAMICS G180 will enter the spare parts phase. At this point, Siemens will no longer manufacture complete G180 units, and the focus will shift to repairs and spare parts supply, The final milestone, P.M490, scheduled for October 1, 2035, will mark the end of spare parts availability and official support.

This phase is especially important for purchasing managers, who must ensure the economic planning of the system. Spare parts availability and associated costs will become critical factors from this point onward.

Which alternatives are available?

The successor to the SINAMICS G180 is the SINAMICS G220, which has been specially developed for industrial applications in the process industry. The G220 offers enhanced features and improved energy efficiency. Siemens plans a gradual market introduction, with various models such as the General Purpose Drive and the Clean Power Drive already available. The G220 will be the recommended long-term replacement for the G180.

Which options does EICHLER GmbH offer during the product discontinuation?

EICHLER GmbH will support technicians and maintenance personnel in the upkeep and repair of the SINAMICS G180. Since Siemens is discontinuing new production, EICHLER offers specialized repairs and refurbishments to extend the devices' lifespan. Additionally, our experts specialize in maintaining obsolete automation technology and ensuring the supply of critical spare parts. Buyers will economically benefit from these solutions, as costly new investments can be avoided.

Conclusion

The announcement of the product status change for the SINAMICS G180 represents a crucial turning point for technicians and purchasers. Timely planning and early transition to the SINAMICS G220 will help maintain operations and ensure system availability. During the transition phase, Eichler GmbH will continue to provide specialized repair and spare parts services.

About the author

Since 2015, I have been working in marketing at EICHLER GmbH. Right at the start, I soldered a submitted S5 CPU module labeled “Made in Western Germany.” This experience sparked my enthusiasm for sustainability and repair in automation technology. Until 2024, I served as editor-in-chief of the customer magazine "News from maintenance", passionately reporting on people and solutions in industrial maintenance. In the new digital magazine, I now focus on Product Change Notifications (PCN) and Product Discontinuation Notifications (PDN).
