Reengineering: Preserve Technology Instead of Replacing it

The cover story of this issue focuses on reengineering—an innovative method where EICHLER faithfully reconstructs components that are no longer available. When manufacturers discontinue parts, reengineering offers an economical and sustainable alternative to replacing entire systems.

Stefan Berger, Head of Technical Department, writes in the editorial:“Our customers need durable solutions. For them, reengineering means not only cost savings but also supply security and sustainability.”

Especially in industries with high investment volumes and long machine runtimes, reengineering is a gamechanger. It maintains repairability and extends the service life of critical systems—a genuine contribution to the circular economy.

Production Halt at Inapal Metal SA averted

How crucial this repair expertise can be is demonstrated by a real-life example from the automotive supplier industry. At Inapal Metal SA, a leading Portuguese manufacturer of sheet metal components, a production press recently broke down due to a defective PLC control board.

The solution? A call to EICHLER.

Claudio Giuppone recalls: “I was just out shopping when my on-call phone rang. An anxious customer from Portugal reported the breakdown. Within a few hours, the defective control board was analyzed, and the repair process initiated.”

Rescue timeline

  • 01.35 p.m.    Personal handover of the defective control board at the EICHLER repair center.
  • 02.00 p.m.    Completion of the fault analysis and start of the repair.
  • 02.40 p.m.     Replacement of damaged components and restoration of the circuit traces.
  • 03.50 p.m.    Functional test on specialized test benches.
  • 04.05 p.m.    Personal return of the fully repaired control board.

Within just a few hours of work, EICHLER had solved the seemingly impossible problem and laid the foundation for the resumption of production. Thanks to the rapid response and precise repair, production was quickly restarted - without delivery delays and without the need for new equipment. Read the full article in the current issue!

Tips and Tricks: Small Actions, Big Impact

In addition to the major topics, the magazine also addresses the everyday challenges o maintenance. On pages 12-13, you'll find helpful tips on protecting automation technology and safely packaging defective devices.

Continuing Education with the EICHLERakademiE

Another highlight: the EICHLER akademie. With over 500 participants annually, it is one of the leading training platforms in the field of maintenance for automation technology.

What makes it special: the seminars are practical, concise, and flexible – whether at the EICHLER training center on-site or as mobile onsite training directly at your company. Maintenance technicians benefit from customized training, right where they work. A concept that inspires!

Since 2015, I have been working in marketing at EICHLER GmbH. Right at the start, I soldered a submitted S5 CPU module labeled “Made in Western Germany.” This experience sparked my enthusiasm for sustainability and repair in automation technology. Until 2024, I served as editor-in-chief of the customer magazine "News from maintenance", passionately reporting on people and solutions in industrial maintenance. In the new digital magazine, I now focus on Product Change Notifications (PCN) and Product Discontinuation Notifications (PDN).
