Which Siemens items are affected and what are they used for?

The Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 (G1) has formed the basis of numerous machine and system controls for many years. With its CPUs, digital and analogue I/O assemblies, safety extensions, communication assemblies and technology assemblies, it covers a wide range of applications. Typical areas of use include assembly systems, packaging machines, conveyor equipment and process functions with a small to medium degree of automation. The assemblies ensure essential control signalling, regulation and communications tasks.

The first generation compromises 71 Siemens part numbers from the 6ES7 series. These include CPUs such as the Siemens 6ES7211-1AE40-0XB0, digital input and output assemblies such as the Siemens 6ES7221-1BF32-0XB0, and analogue modules such as the Siemens 6ES7231-4HF32-0XB0. They are complemented by safety modules, communication components such as the Siemens 6GK7243-1BX30-0XE0, as well as technology assemblies and accessories. This diversity enables flexible machine concepts that are often operated uncharged for many years.

With the planned product status change of 1 November 2026, Siemens is setting the P.M400 milestone for the entire Siemens S7-1200 G1 family. At the same time, new units will remain available for purchase until 31 October 2027. A further nine years of spare-parts availability are planned for the subsequent service phases. This means that the life cycle follows Siemens' clearly defined milestones, progressing from P.M300 to P.M410 and later to P.M490.

What does the product status P.M400 mean for the Siemens S7-1200 G1?

The P.M400 milestone marks the official transition at Siemens from active sales to the phase-out stage. For the Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 (G1), this status comes into effect on 1 November 2026. Although Siemens will no longer actively promote the assemblies from this date onwards, they will remain available as new units until 31 October 2027. For many existing systems, this provides an important planning window to complete projects or strategically increase stock levels.

With the transition to P.M400, the ten-year spare-parts commitment also begins. During this phase, defective Siemens assemblies of the S7-1200 G1 can still be replaced with original parts - however, increasingly depending on available stock levels. Precise information on spare-parts prices is provided by Siemens exclusively through direct contacts. The Service Mall, by contrast, sometimes displays differing values, as list prices are not identical to spare-parts prices.

The subsequent P.M410 status will transfer the Siemens S7-1200 G1 fully into the spare-parts phase. From this point onwards, the procurement of new units will no longer be possible, and the product will only be available as a spare part. After the end of Siemens' obligations, the P.M490 milestone follows. From this stage onwards, there are no longer any delivery or support commitments.

For operators, the early transition has a clear economic impact. The costs of new units often increase during phase-out periods, while availability becomes increasingly inconsistent. EICHLER closes this supply gap with repaired and function-tested Siemens assemblies, as well as with clearly predictable repair costs. This reduces procurement expenses, prevents breakdowns, and significantly extends the service life of the Siemens S7-1200 G1 far beyond the official life cycle limit.

What advantages does the switch to the successor, the Siemens S7-1200 G2, offer?

The Siemens S7-1200 G2 is the direct and technically superior successor to the S7-1200 G1. It meets modern requirements for performance, safety, connectivity and transparency. Its significantly increased processing power supports faster operations and expands the range of applications. More complex automation tasks can be implemented with higher process dynamics, which is particularly valuable for packaging, robotics and synchronised drives.

The expanded safety portfolio facilitates more flexible machine concepts. Motion control functions are more precise and more intuitively integrated. At the same time, the Siemens S7-1200 G2 achieves a higher security level through compliance with IEC 62443-4-2. This enhances cybersecurity and reduces risks that are becoming increasingly relevant in a networked Industry 4.0 environment.

Integration into the TIA Portal remains fully preserved, allowing existing engineering processes to be maintained. Migration support simplifies the transition and reduces project times. For new applications and modernisation projects, the Siemens S7-1200 G2 is therefore the economically sustainable long-term choice.

Legend product status:

  • P.M300 = Active delivery phase
  • P.M400 = Discontinuation announcement
  • P.M410 = Withdrawal of new units, spare-parts supply only
  • P.M490 = End of spare-parts obligation
  • P.M500 = End of product life cycle

The procurement of new units ends on 31 October 2027. This is followed by the dedicated spare-parts phase, which is planned to run until 2036.

Risks arise from lead times, prices increases and declining stock levels. EICHLER reduces these risks through tested spare parts and repairs.

Yes, provided that spare parts remain available. EICHLER significantly extends the service life through repairs down to component level.

It is advisable for critical system areas. Prices and lead times typically increase once the phase-out begins.

Mixed operation is possible, but depends on the I/O concept and the communication setup.

How does EICHLER support customers during the phase-out of the Siemens S7-1200 G1?

EICHLER specialises in the repair, maintenance and supply of discontinued automation technology. The portfolio covers all Siemens assemblies of the S7-1200 G1. Repairs are carried out down to component level, resulting not in flat-rate costs but in precisely calculated charges based on the actual defect. The quotation is transparent and includes clearly defined fault causes and measurement reports.

Spare-parts supply is provided via EICHLER's own online shop. There, function-tested Siemens spare parts for the S7-1200 G1 are available - either used or new. Each part undergoes extensive testing before dispatch, and the warranty last for up to 36 months. This provides a significant economic advantage compared to procuring new units, which will become more difficult and more expensive from 2027 onwards.

EICHLER also supports Repair Management for large industrial systems. This includes condition analyses, recommissioning, spare-parts strategies and obsolescence planning. Maintenance teams benefit from secure supply, purchasing departments profit from reduced costs, and technicians ensure system uptime far beyond the official Siemens life cycle. This approach provides a sustainable solution for the phase-out of the Siemens S7-1200 G1.
